Building Blocks of a Strong Resume
A well-structured resume guides the reader through your qualifications in a logical, compelling order. While the specific sections you include may vary based on your experience and industry, certain elements are universal.
Contact Information (Required)
Include your full name, phone number, professional email, city and state (full address isn't necessary), and LinkedIn profile URL. For tech roles, add your GitHub or portfolio link. Make sure every piece of contact info is current and professional.
Professional Summary or Objective (Recommended)
A brief statement at the top of your resume that captures your professional identity and value proposition. Experienced professionals should use a summary highlighting achievements; newcomers can use a targeted objective statement.
Work Experience (Required)
List your relevant positions in reverse chronological order. For each role, include the company name, job title, dates, and 3-5 bullet points focused on achievements rather than duties. Start each bullet with a strong action verb.
Education (Required)
Include your degree, institution, and graduation date. Add relevant coursework, honors, or GPA only if you're a recent graduate. For experienced professionals, education moves below work experience.
Skills (Recommended)
A concise list of relevant hard and soft skills, categorized for easy scanning. Prioritize skills mentioned in the job description. This section also helps with ATS keyword matching.
Optional Sections
Depending on your background, consider adding: Certifications, Projects, Publications, Volunteer Experience, Languages, Awards, or Professional Affiliations. Include these only if they strengthen your candidacy for the specific role.
